Interview conducted by: Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published – July 29, 2013

CEOCFO: Mr. Aabedi, what is the concept of LogiCoy?

Mr. Aabedi: The concept is open-source integration software and specifically it is called OpenESB. It is used as a vehicle to orchestrate composite applications together in a service oriented architecture using standards. It is a pure Java software that has been available in open-source for many years with many companies using it. It was originally developed as one Java Community Processed JSR 208 under sponsorship from Sun Microsystems and other vendors. I was an architect and development manager for OpenESB, GlassFish ESB and Java CAPS at Sun Microsystems.

CEOCFO: Are there particular industries of focus for what you have developed?

Mr. Aabedi: It is actually used by many different industries. The customers include financial companies, healthcare providers and payers, telecommunications companies, manufacturing companies, gaming companies and so forth. Integration is used by many companies to do their B2B applications or internal application integrations between their various systems or providing business process automation or orchestration in a Service Oriented Architecture. It is widely used in various verticals and some government agencies.

CEOCFO: What is better about your offering--what have you figured out that perhaps others have not?

Mr. Aabedi: One thing is that is it completely open-source and free to use. There is really no barrier to entry. Many users or customers use it for free with just community support. The more sophisticated and larger companies come to us--we are the experts and the people who offer it. We are the actual developers of Sun who developed it and architected it from scratch and now work for LogiCoy. That is why when bigger companies want to use it, they come to us for support and sometimes their own implementation developers ask us for a consultation or implementation for them.

CEOCFO: Would you tell us about your staff augmentation side of the business?

Mr. Aabedi: It is usually surrounding our offering--we do not do general staff augmentation. It is related to architecture for Service Oriented Architecture applications, Composite applications, B2B applications and integration applications.

CEOCFO: What are some of the changes you have been able to implement over time at LogiCoy?

Mr. Aabedi: Recently we released versions 2.3 and 2.3.1 and have the framework for supporting many application servers. Originally, it was only supported on GlassFish Application Server. We also have support for other popular application servers like JBOSS Application Server version 5 and 7, a very popular open-source web application server called Tomcat; even stand-alone Java is supported. We have also added additional components, upgraded features and bug fixes in many components of OpenESB, as well as support for the new version of GlassFish (V3) and based on Netbeans 7.3 IDE.

CEOCFO: How do you evaluate things that you might need to implement or add to offerings later on?

Mr. Aabedi: Sometimes it depends on the requests in the community and some of it is our existing customers but also internally within our own development team, thinking ahead. Some of the things that are not under the radar for us, a Cloud based version of OpenESB, which is coming up, and support for Apache Camel, which is implementation of enterprise integration patterns, and also support for the popular Drools Rules Engine project. Some of those things have not particularly come from either the community forums or customers but they are things that we think, later, folks will be interested in.

CEOCFO: How do you reach potential customers?

Mr. Aabedi: Mostly word of mouth through marketing and basically publishing white papers and so forth that catches the eye. Some of it is referrals and many of it is consulting about implementations and bigger companies refer us.

CEOCFO: Is there an "aha" moment for customers when they understand the difference LogiCoy is able to provide?

Mr. Aabedi: Many times it is not right away. We have negotiations and because they are used to paying a lot of money they do not initially understand or do not want to take the risk, or what they perceive to be a risk. We have actually had a few cases where after a few months or a year they come back and say, "Yeah, we tried what we thought was comfortable and it didn't work or was too expensive. We want to try going to open-source with your production Support plans." That is a key differentiator between us and most other open-source projects. We provide global, 24/7, 1-hour response for OpenESB, and GlassFish infrastructure and all of its related components and architecture as well as the actual applications. That is different than any other open-source project--you usually cannot get good support, and ours is. That is why our customers are Fortune 100 companies.

CEOCFO: How is business?

Mr. Aabedi: Business is getting better. We started out in 2009, which was probably the worst time to start a company. We have been growing for 5 years--we have offices in the US, UK and India with customers around the world.

CEOCFO: What sets LogiCoy apart as a company to investors and people in the business community?

Mr. Aabedi: Besides being a tech company that provides an integration tool or enterprise service tool that is open, inexpensive and supported, they should look at our expertise in healthcare. We have a lot of track record in providing libraries and tools for the healthcare integration market, including libraries that are used into the NwHIN Connect Gateway that is part of the National Health Information Network, or the integration pieces that connect up the legacy healthcare applications. They could also look at our initiatives for various governmental programs, for example the Prescription Drug Abuse programs. We are not just a tech company; we are a tech company that specializes in various markets that includes financial, telecommunications and healthcare, and we actually have built these applications and we support them for those markets. They can come to us for these or any other solution as well.

CEOCFO: Final thoughts?

Mr. Aabedi: The future for connected networks involves integration. It has always been that way. Now that we are improving this digital infrastructure, the connection and how easy it can be made in a standard way is the key. These tools will make it easier for everyone to get connected.
