Wrist Bracelet Monitoring Platform for Lung and Heart Disease

About Oxitone Medical
www.oxitone.com

Founded in 2010 Oxitone Medical is on a mission to dramatically improve patient safety and quality of life. Oxitoneis developing a first-of-its-kind wrist bracelet monitoring platform to automatic, continuous 24/7 supervision of pulmonary, heart and sleep related disease anytime, anywhere. Oxitone moves pulse oximetry to the wrist developing the most innovative technological solution called the trans-illumination pulse oximetry. Also, Oxitone added blood flow related vital signs taken by the unique micro-optical sensor. Then the magic happens – having a new source of vital information Oxitone is developing software, application and cloud that continuously trace patient conditions 24/7. The device will enable to generate preventive alert to avoid hospitalization, to prevent readmission and to eliminate sudden death. The secret source is a Dynamic Health Report which can be generated with the minute resolution out of the core vital signs real-time trending and correlation analysis. The information can be recorded and securely sent to the health care providers or emergency services.

Interview conducted by: Lynn Fosse, Senior Editor, CEOCFO Magazine, Published - December 30, 2013

CEOCFO: Dr. Eisen, what is the concept behind Oxitone Medical?

Dr. Eisen: The life of people with chronic lung and heart diseases can be challenging, unpredictable and even dangerous. There are exacerbations, sudden attacks and depression. To survive, it needs vital signs to track, write down and sends reports...mostly using bulky and uncomfortable crocodile-style fingertip pulse oximeters dedicated for episodic measurement only. Obviously, comfortable, continuous and passive monitoring of core vital signs opens new horizons for the patient's wellbeing.

CEOCFO: What are some of the technology challenges to make the transition?

Dr. Eisen: To our knowledge there is no any device which can measure blood oxygen at wrist with needed accuracy and reliability except Oxitone. Number of companies tried but couldn’t. The main technological challenge is that our wrist is characterized by the low vascular bad, very complex anatomic structure and high motion artifacts that kill the pulse oximetry signal. A conventional reflective pulse oximetry just doesn’t work. It looks like there is no place on wrist where we can measure blood oxygen saturation.

CEOCFO: Where did you find a spot on the wrist that would work?

Dr. Eisen: Currently, I cannot disclose our technology but I can say couple of words about it. For the first couple of years we explored all possible sensor configurations and technologies. Finally, we invented and patented a new optical technology called trans-illumination pulse oximetry that really works. The secret source is that we exploit this wrist complexity to guide and focus the light, so to say each element of this structure we consider like quasi-optical element.

CEOCFO: What type of patients should be monitoring?

Dr. Eisen: The Oxitone bracelet is mostly dedicated forthe patients with chronic pulmonary diseases like COPD and asthma. At the same time pulse oximeters are widely used as complementary monitors for the people with conjunctive heart failure, sleep apnea and other chronic diseases. The main problem is that patientsdo not like uncomfortable fingertip sensors. These sensors bite the finger and slip down during the sleep. Also, they are not reliable at movement. Anybody who once was hospitalized experienced a wired annoying fingertip sensor connected to the monitor. We are looking for to replace these by the Oxitone wireless bracelet thereby to improve patient’s comfort and, at the same time to keep the patient connected even out of thebed.

Continuous monitoring, it is only methodto ensure a predictability factor and automatic emergency alert. Why does proactive medicine not exist today? Even telemedicine companies provide some “post-event” medical monitoring. “Push the button” is currently the main method to call some help. We are going to automate patient’s monitoring process by introducing a correlative analysis of the core vital signs in real time, continuously and with high temporal resolution. It should be fully personalized device which learns the patient and alerts if something goes wrong. It gives physician some time to figure out a situation and to take some steps to prevent hospitalization. Adding pulse oximetry we bring patient life tracking device to a medical grade level.

CEOCFO: Where are you in the development and commercialization process?

Dr. Eisen: The device is not ready for the market yet. We expect to hit the market in 2015.  We have a fully functional wireless bracelet prototype, real-time smartphone application and data center. To have a noticeable stat we conduct negotiations with the telemedicine and insurance companies in US, Europe and Africa for the life pilot tests. So far, we conducted clinical tests in Meir Hospital (Israel) and have more than 300 successful measurements either statically or during patient movements. This is a first time when wrist pulse oximeter has proved its accuracy and reliability.

CEOCFO: Is the medical community aware of what you are working on or is it too early?

Dr. Eisen: One of my main concerns for the last three year is to promote continuous monitoring as a valuable method for the patient’s 24/7 medical supervision. Some result of my activity could be estimated by the physician's attitude to the Oxitone device - more than 1000 physicians voted for the Oxitone at the recent Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit where I presented the device. As a result, we have received a Clinician's Impact Award.

Also, Oxitone is a member of the prestigious three-year Start Up Health and GE Entrepreneurship Program. Only 13 companies worldwide won this right out of the 400 that applied last year.

CEOCFO: Do you have the funding you need to continue? Will you be looking for funding and partnerships?

Dr. Eisen: So far we have spent about one million dollars on the product development. I hope to complete with the next round of investment as soon as possible. We are raising three million dollars that will allow reaching the market within eighteen months. We have a lead investor with $1.5 million. Currently we are working with number of funds and companies on a matching fund of another $1.5 million. We are not looking for just money but smart money. We are going to build a highly professional and experienced Board. We consider our investors as partners who can take responsibility for the certain company’s activity.

CEOCFO: What have you learned in previous experiences that have been most helpful at Oxitone?

Dr. Eisen: I have experience as a scientist, engineer and entrepreneur building both simple and complex medical devices and systems. My previous experience helped me to gain a vision on the future of the healthcare and reflect this vision on the device. In the nearest future I foresee the fully personalized, wearable and proactive medical monitoring systems which passively take control on disease while patent can focus on her creative life. These systems will be able to learn automatically the owner's behavior and vitals with high temporal resolution, integrate it and build a dynamic health, disease and behavior reports... and provide some feedback.

CEOCFO: Why should Oxitone standout in the healthcare community?

Dr. Eisen: The dream of proactive medicine will come true only if we will be able to draw a full picture. Itimplies continuous monitoring not only a pulse rate, activity, skin temperature or some derivatives but such core vitals likebreathing rate, heart rate variability, pulse oximetry, blood flow related vital signs, some blood analytes and more. The underlined algorithms will reflect the patient’s health complexity. An attractive industrial design should cement the whole system. Moving pulse oximetry to wrist as a first step to proactive medicine. Oxitone is going to take a proactive control on disease. Also, consumer market could gain from the Oxitone.
